Prevention volunteers have the opportunity to assist our prevention team in their efforts to educate the community about sexual assault, consent, bystander intervention, and healthy relationships. Prevention education advocates will build personal and professional skills including public speaking, curriculum development, and event planning.

Training Requirement: Prevention education advocates are required to attend 10 hours of online training and 22-hour training over a span of one week. ALL dates are mandatory. Click here to see our next training dates

There are two options if you are interested in joining our prevention and education team:

  • Community and K-12 Prevention Education (Open to all community members)
  • University of Iowa Prevention and Education (Must be current UI student; Currently WRAC at the University is the only program offering this volunteer opportunity. Click here to be redirected to their website.
  1. Community and K-12 Prevention Education

    Expectations

    • Co-facilitate youth education & prevention curriculum to middle and high school aged students at secondary schools in our 8 county service area
    • Develop and deliver presentations on sexual violence awareness, prevention, and RVAP services for a variety of constituents in our 8 county service area
    • Aid in the development and execution of Sexual Assault Awareness Month activities and events in April
    • Assist in staffing information booths to raise awareness about RVAP services

    Qualifications

    • Be at least 18 years old
    • Have access to reliable transportation to Iowa City School District Schools
    • Experience working with youth is highly desirable
    • Public speaking experience is highly desirable
    • Must have some availability to volunteer during the 8-3pm school day
    • Volunteer 5 hours of your time every three months
    • Commit to volunteer for one academic year

    The UI Violence Prevention group is open to all University of Iowa students (undergraduate or graduate/professional) who are dedicated to ending sexual violence at the University of Iowa.

    Expectations

    • Co-facilitating workshops to University of Iowa students, faculty, and staff.
    • Create and enact information and awareness campaigns aimed at ending sexual violence
    • Help create, plan, and staff events on campus during Sexual Assault Activism Month and beyond
    • Assist in staffing information tables to raise awareness of RVAP services and prevention activities

    Qualifications

    • Be at least 18 years old
    • Be enrolled at the University of Iowa
    • Volunteer 10 hours each semester
    • Commit to volunteer for one academic year
